know about the devrai

Tucked away in the heart of villages, untouched by axes and untouched by time, the Devrai, or sacred grove is not just a cluster of trees. It is a living sanctuary, a womb of biodiversity, where nature is revered and allowed to thrive in peace.

A Home to Countless Creatures

In every branch and beneath every leaf, Devrai shelters life. Because it remains undisturbed for decades, sometimes centuries, the grove becomes a safe haven for flora and fauna that often vanish from farmlands and towns.

The melodious Malabar Whistling Thrush, The elusive Indian paradise flycatcher, and majestic peacocks calling through the rain, The green shimmer of Leafbirds hiding among the canopy, Tree frogs that sing after the first rain, Geckos, snakes, and skinks that balance the forest’s food web, Unique species like the forest vine snake thrive in such untouched shade, Agile Indian Giant Squirrels leaping across trees, Night-roaming civets and mongoose, A universe of butterflies, bees, and sacred silence  with that more than 1000 birds, animals, Reptiles, Amphibians, Mammals, Insects,

 Why Devrai Matters Today

  • It preserves native species that are vanishing elsewhere

  • It acts as a natural water source, supporting nearby farms

  • It is a climate buffer, cooling the village and holding the soil together

  • And most importantly, it connects us with an ancestral way of respect — not dominance — over nature

Devrai is not just forest — it is faith, breath, and balance.
Breath Charitable Trust is working to protect and recreate these sacred groves, reviving their life-giving legacy.
